En un lugar de la Mancha, de cuyo nombre no quiero acordarme, no ha mucho tiempo que vivía un hidalgo de los de lanza en astillero, adarga antigua, rocín flaco y galgo corredor.

In a village of La Mancha, the name of which I have no desire to call to mind, there lived not long since one of those gentlemen that keep a lance in the lance-rack, an old buckler, a lean hack, and a greyhound for coursing.

Why learn Spanish by reading books

Spanish verb conjugation is easiest to absorb in context. Seeing the subjunctive in a real sentence, with a translation beside it, teaches more than a conjugation table.

Literary Spanish uses many more tenses than textbook Spanish. Reading with instant translation lets you meet them early without stopping to open a dictionary.

The audio narrator reads each paragraph with a Spanish voice, so you hear the rhythm and stress patterns that spelling does not show.

Spanish reading: common questions

Can I read Spanish books for free?
Yes. PolyglotReader is free. Upload a Spanish EPUB, PDF or text file you own, or paste text, and read it with inline translation. Public-domain Spanish books from sites like Project Gutenberg work well.
What level of Spanish do I need?
You can start at A2. Use the simplified mode to rewrite difficult passages at a B1 level, and tap any paragraph to see the English translation when you get stuck.
Does it work for Latin American and Peninsular Spanish?
Yes. The reader works with whatever Spanish your book is written in, and the translation and word lookup take the surrounding sentence into account.
