Word Games Made from the Page You Are Reading
Test yourself on the exact sentences you just read.
Reading shows you words. Games make you produce them. Press Play in the reading toolbar and PolyglotReader builds short word games from the page on screen, so you practise the vocabulary and sentence patterns of the book you are actually reading.

How it works
- Open a book and turn to a page you have read.
- Press Play in the toolbar and choose a game.
- Play a set of three rounds, with instant feedback after every answer and a Hint button when you are stuck.
- See your score, stars and best streak, then play again with new sentences or pick another game.
Five games
Fill the blanks hides one word in a sentence from the page and offers four choices. The wrong choices are other words from the same page, picked to be a similar length to the answer.
Type the word hides the same kind of word, and you type it. The first letter is shown, and each wrong try reveals one more. Accents are optional for Latin-script words, so you can answer without a special keyboard.
Fill the gaps hides several words in one sentence. Drag them back in from a word bank that also holds one decoy.
Unscramble shuffles the words of a sentence and you tap them back into order.
Guess the word gives you a clue and the letters of a word in a jumble, and you drag the letters into the gaps to spell it.
Your flashcards come back as a game
Guess the word uses your newest active flashcards first. The translation you saved is the clue, so the words you looked up while reading are the ones you spell. With no flashcards yet, it picks longer content words from the page and shows the sentence with the word blanked out.
Hints when you need them
Every game has a Hint button. It crosses out a wrong choice, uncovers a letter, places the next word or fills the next gap, and it never gives away the last piece of the answer. A hint costs the same as one wrong try, so you can still finish the round with a decent score.
In Unscramble, Say it reads the sentence aloud, and in Fill the gaps, Play sentence does. In Type the word and Guess the word you can hear the word the same way. Hearing the answer also counts as a hint.
Hear the word
In Type the word, press Say it to hear the hidden word spoken in the book’s language with your chosen narrator voice and speed. Hearing the word counts as a hint, so the round is worth fewer points. The voices available depend on your browser and device.
Points, streaks and stars
A correct answer on the first try scores the most, and a run of first-try answers adds a streak bonus. Fewer points are awarded after mistakes or hints, and none if you reveal the answer. At the end you get one to three stars based on how many rounds you got right first time.
Made from your own text, in your browser
Games are generated on your device from the page you are reading, original or simplified, and work with any language, including Chinese and Japanese text written without spaces. No translation requests are made and nothing is sent anywhere. Scores last for the session and are not saved.
Questions
- Why is a game unavailable on some pages?
- Each game needs suitable full sentences. Pages made of headings, very short lines or very long sentences may not have enough, so try the next page.
- Do the games use the simplified text?
- Yes. Games use whichever version of the page is on screen, original or simplified, so you can start easier and move to the original later.
